Three billion pounds per year are produced in the United States and 12 billion globally. 1,3-butadiene is produced through the processing of petroleum and is mainly used in the production of synthetic rubber, but is also found in smaller amounts in plastics and fuel. Exposure to 1,3-butadiene mainly occurs in the workplace, including the following industries: synthetic elastomer (rubber and latex) production, petroleum refining, secondary lead smelting, water treatment, agricultural fungicides, production of raw material for nylon, and the use of fossil fuels. Exposure can also occur from automobile exhaust; polluted air and water near chemical, plastic or rubber facilities; cigarette smoke; and ingestion of foods that are contaminated from plastic or rubber containers.

    Accident Investigation: - Thousands of accidents occur throughout the United States every day. The failure of people, equipment, supplies, or surroundings to behave or react as expected causes most of them. Accident investigations determine how and why these failures occur. By using the information gained through an investigation, a similar, or perhaps more disastrous, accident may be prevented. It is important to conduct accident investigations with prevention in mind. There are currently no specific standards for accident investigation.

    A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer. This may be due to the ability to damage the genome or to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes. Several radioactive substances are considered carcinogens, but their carcinogenic activity is attributed to the radiation, for example gamma rays and alpha particles, which they emit.     The arctic air, together with brisk winds, can lead to dangerously cold wind chill values. People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to frostbite in a matter of minutes.     OSHA 1910.332 (b) (2) also requires unqualified workers to be trained in the electrical safe work practices that are necessary for their safety.     A definite plan to deal with major emergencies is an important element of OH&S programs.

    Besides the major benefit of providing guidance during an emergency, developing the plan has other advantages. You may discover unrecognized hazardous conditions that would aggravate an emergency situation and you can work to eliminate them. The planning process may bring to light deficiencies, such as the lack of resources (equipment, trained personnel, supplies), or items that can be corrected before an emergency occurs. In addition, an emergency plan promotes safety awareness and shows the organization's commitment to the safety of workers.

    The lack of an emergency plan could lead to severe losses such as multiple casualties and possible financial collapse of the organization.

    Since emergencies will occur, preplanning is necessary. An urgent need for rapid decisions, shortage of time, and lack of resources and trained personnel can lead to chaos during an emergency. Time and circumstances in an emergency mean that normal channels of authority and communication cannot be relied upon to function routinely. The stress of the situation can lead to poor judgment resulting in severe losses. A well thought out, well organized emergency response plan will help to eliminate these issues.

    The actions taken in the initial minutes of an emergency are critical. A prompt warning to employees to evacuate, shelter or lockdown can save lives. A call for help to public emergency services that provides full and accurate information will help the dispatcher send the right responders and equipment. An employee trained to administer first aid or perform CPR can be lifesaving. Action by employees with knowledge of building and process systems can help control a leak and minimize damage to the facility and the environment.

    Human factors and ergonomics (commonly referred to as human factors) is the application of psychological and physiological principles to the engineering and design of products, processes, and systems. The goal of human factors is to reduce human error, increase productivity, and enhance safety and comfort with a specific focus on the interaction between the human and the thing of interest.

    Trench collapses, or cave-ins, pose the greatest risk to workers’ lives. When done safely, trenching operations can reduce worker exposure to other potential hazards include falls, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres, and incidents involving mobile equipment. OSHA standards require that employers provide workplaces free of recognized hazards. The employer must comply with the trenching and excavation requirements of 29 CFR 1926.651 and 1926.652 or comparable OSHA-approved state plan requirements.

    Statistics indicate that most eye injuries can be prevented by using adequate shields and glasses. Standard safety glasses protect eyes from flying particles of metal, wood, stone, plastic or glass coming from the front only. Safety glasses with semi-side shields protect eyes from flying particles coming from the front or the side.

    Emergency eye washes and showers are used in labs, chemical plants, paper mills, and other environments with potentially harmful chemicals or materials. They're often required to meet government regulations and safety standards. Combination eye-wash stations are all-in-one eye wash and shower units. Drench hoses serve as fixed eye-rinse stations or can be removed from their holder for directing the spray where needed.

    Since fall protection historically has been the most-violated OSHA standard, the agency has updated a final rule on walking-working surfaces. Under the new rule, employers have more flexibility when selecting fall protection systems that are most suitable for their workers. For example, the use of rope descent systems up to 300 feet above a surface level is now permitted. Personal fall arrest systems can no longer include body belts, which basically are waist belts with D-rings or attachment points

    Fatigue is a feeling of tiredness. It may be sudden or gradual in onset. It is a normal phenomenon if it follows prolonged physical or mental activity, and resolves completely with rest. However, it may be a symptom of a medical condition if it is prolonged, severe, progressive, or occurs without provocation.

    Fire caulking is important in preventing the spread of deadly fires in commercial properties and homes that are more vulnerable. If a fire were to spread into electrical systems or in other vulnerable areas, it can cause a lot of damage. Fire caulking works by containing the fire to the room in which it originated.

    Fire is a chemical reaction that requires three elements to be present for the reaction to take place and continue. The three elements are: Heat, or an ignition source Fuel, &  Oxygen. These three elements typically are referred to as the “fire triangle.” Fire is the result of the reaction between the fuel and oxygen in the air. Scientists developed the concept of a fire triangle to aid in understanding of the cause of fires and how they can be prevented and extinguished. Heat, fuel and oxygen must combine in a precise way for a fire to start and continue to burn. If one element of the fire triangle is not present or removed, fire will not start or, if already burning,will extinguish.

    A fire warden also plays a crucial role if fire breaks out. In the event of a fire emergency, fire wardens must keep employers and visitors safe and ensuring a safe evacuation.

    Since the advent of the industrial revolution, the use of non-water-based chemicals has increased dramatically. Exposure to the hazards associated with these chemicals has also increased. One potential hazard is flammability. To prevent fires, hazardous liquids require special precautions in storage, handling and use. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Fire Code (IFC) have developed guidelines for the safe storage and use of flammables.

    Simply put, an arc flash is a phenomenon where a flash-over of electric current leaves its intended path and travels through the air from one conductor to another, or to ground. The results are often violent and when a human is in close proximity to the arc flash, serious injury and even death can occur.

    Forklift training is very important for workers operating powered industrial trucks or forklifts. There are approximately 100 fatalities and over 36,000 serious injuries that occur on or around forklifts every year. Proper forklift training and certification can not only help save a workers life and prevent serious injury, it also increases the average income for the certificate holder when compared to those that do not have proper training and certification.

    The primary purpose of the Gas Hazards Control Program shall be to promote safety in the repair of marine vessels and facilities by promoting the training and certification of persons engaged in inspecting such vessels and facilities to determine their gas free status.

    In 2003, the United Nations (UN) adopted the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS includes criteria for the classification of health, physical and environmental hazards, as well as specifying what information should be included on labels of hazardous chemicals as well as safety data sheets. The United States was an active participant in the development of the GHS, and is a member of the UN bodies established to maintain and coordinate implementation of the system.

    A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), or Residual Current Device (RCD) is a type of circuit breaker which shuts off electric power when it senses an imbalance between the outgoing and incoming current. The main purpose is to protect people from an electric shock caused when some of the current travels through a person's body due to an electrical fault such as a short circuit, insulation failure, or equipment malfunction. Standard circuit breakers shut off power when the current is too high, like 10, 15, or 20 amps, but a mere 0.030 amps through a body can cause paralysis of skeletal muscles and stop the human heart. The GFCI / RCD breaks the circuit when it detects an imbalance of only 0.005 amps (0.030 amps in Australia and some European and Asian countries).

    Some Hazards are easier to recognize. Some are harder to recognize. On the Energy Wheel below the first two Hazards (going clockwise) are the easy ones to recognize. People easily spot long drops (Gravity) and things in motion. So, why aren’t they doing something about it?

    Hazardous materials response (HAZMAT) team means an organized group of employees, designated by the employer, who are expected to perform work to handle and control actual or potential leaks or spills of hazardous substances requiring possible close approach to the substance. The team members perform responses to releases or potential releases of hazardous substances for the purpose of control or stabilization of the incident.

    Manual materials handling (lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling) is the most common category of compensable injuries in the United States work force, with four out of five of those injuries involving the lower back. OSHA recommends using a formal training program to reduce materials handling hazards.

    Participants will learn the requirements to be a flagger—from skills and abilities to personal protective equipment.
